Easy Day Thailand Staff Party at Khao Sok – Part 4

Easy Day Staff Party 2012: Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4

Once the necessary pictures had been taken we gathered for the quick transfer up river in the van and cars, only about 10 minutes, where everyone boarded canoes for a guided tour down the river. The river skirted along the cliff walls and past the resort and everyone had a relaxing time.

Canoeing at Khao Sok

Upon our arrival down river, a hardy lunch was served and after the ride down river, everyone was hungry. Not to rush things, everyone relaxed for a couple of minutes to let our food settle before moving on to our next river voyage with Tubing. This time we decided to actually enjoy the river water and use large inner tubes to float down the river. One problem was getting in a starting the journey, the other was how cold the water was, by the time we were getting out everyone was looking to warm up.

All in all, it was a good day on the river and everyone agreed it was great fun and a different kind of adventure then they are use to. After a brief discussion, Diego decided since we got out of the river right at “The Cliff & River Jungle Resort” Restaurant, we might as well relax a bit and have dinner there before getting on the road to head home to Phuket. Dinner was very good and we all got to choose what looked good on the menu. Everyone’s hunger satisfied and warm again, we load into the various vehicles we came in for the long ride back, I was glad to be in the minivan and not driving. Everyone arrived home safe and sound after what was a great two day adventure to one of Thailand’s beautiful Nature Parks.

Easy Day Thailand Staff Party at Khao Sok – Part 3

Easy Day Staff Party 2012: Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4

After a leisurely ride back across the lake to where our vehicles were parked, we all headed to “The Cliff & River Jungle Resort” to check in to our individual cabins. Once we get checked in some relax in their cabins while the more energetic soles head to the pool for a quick dip.

We are in the peaceful, calm Garden Zone near the restaurant overlooking the river we will enjoy tomorrow.

A couple of hours of free time to relax and recharge our batteries bring us to the dinner party at one of our guide’s house. He has setup a great BBQ pit and has already started the slabs of pork tenderloins, jumbo shrimp, hot dogs, and plump sausages. The table is covered with various beverages on one end while the other holds the steamed rice and noodles along with several Thai dishes and condiments. In no time everyone is helping themselves and serving others the various delights from the BBQ.

I enjoyed the BBQ Shrimp and hot dogs while my girlfriend filled her plate with noodles and traditional Thai dishes to begin, but wasting no time peeling and eating the BBQ Shrimp. Diego brings out several large loaves of bread and cut up the pork to make nice thick sandwiches. The music is loud and fills the air with a rhythmic beat that provided a great opportunity for some karaoke after the kids have eaten their fill.

Easy Day Thailand Staff Party at Khao Sok – Part 2

Easy Day Staff Party 2012: Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4

After our initial stop we headed to the middle of the dam to await the arrival of several members of our group that had trouble getting started as early as the rest of us. Again the views from this vantage point were incredible and we all enjoyed relaxing on the grass while we waited patiently. Taking advantage of this opportunity, we took some pictures marking it as the “Easy Day Thailand Staff Party 2555”. It took several attempts to get the pose just right.

After this brief respot and once the entire group was together, we headed down to the “Long Tail Boat” docks to board our boat for the trip across the approximately 1,500 sq Kilometer lake. Getting down to the boats and then boarding them proved to be an adventure in itself for me, but once on board the breeze and spray from the bow of the boat as it cut through the water were very pleasant.

Once we reached the far end of the lake, we arrived at a restaurant/cabins resort where we had both breakfast and lunch.

While the adults relaxed and ate, the kids in our group enjoy a refreshing dip in the lake and tried practising their kayaking skills.

Easy Day Thailand Staff Party at Khao Sok – Part 1

Easy Day Staff Party 2012: Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4

Every one at Easy Day Thailand was very excited and really looking forward to the two day outing to Khao Sok National Park. After all it was 2 days away from work, staying at the beautiful “Cliff & River Jungle Resort”, with lots of great activities to keep us entertained. All in all we had a wonderful two days of excitement and adventures.

Tuesday started out at the marvellous hour of 4:00 am for yours truly, when my alarm awaken me so I and my girlfriend could be ready for the minivan pickup at 4:50. Unlike most minivan drivers in Thailand, ours was right on time, perhaps 5 minutes early. I am not sure what time he started, but he had already picked up two others. We headed over to Kathu to pick up several more people before heading north to Khao Sok for our first day of relaxation. We did make several stops along the way for fuel and provisions before arriving at picturesque Rajjaprabh Dam. First we stopped just off the dam to take some pictures for our scrapbooks.

The Easy Day  folks checking their cameras and stretching their legs after the long ride.

For those of you interested here are some facts about the dam; the crest length is 969 meters, with a maximum height of 94 meters; and a volume of 6.5 million cubic meters. It is a hydroelectric dam and produces a maximum of 240 MW. At its normal high water level of 95.0 m, the reservoir has an active storage of 5 050 million cubic meter and a water surface of 165 sq.km2. After project completion the Chiew Larn Dam was conferred by His majesty the King to be called the “Rajjaprabha” Dam which means in English the “Ligth of the Kingdom” Dam.

Here we see the inside and outside faces of the dam and down into the valley below it.

Rajjaprabh DamVally below the Rajjaprabh DamRajjaprabh Dam

But I must admit that these shots out over the lake Behind the dam are the most beautiful views. The pictures do not do this scene justice with the gigantic limestone cliffs rising out of the earth all around the lake.

Surviving SongKran & Bike Week?

The past two weekends have been very busy indeed, first another Water Festival has come and gone, were you able to survive the weekend’s water fight on Soi Bangla?  How is your wrist watch working, any problems after getting soaked as you walked down the street?  No problems while you were driving from place to place in Patong, a bucket of water in the face can be very dangerous if you are driving a motorbike.  Were you able to find and purchase an adequate water gun to deliver a nice stream of water or were you one of the unlucky people who had the guns with the weak streams, ensuring you always got the worse of any duels?  And just when you thought it was safe to go out again in dry clothes, there was a die hard soul that insisted on carrying Songkran that extra mile.  I know there were some that chose to start a day early, I got wet on my way home late Thursday afternoon, even though I tried yell “mai Ow” (meaning not want).  Were you one of those hardy souls that play well into the night on Friday, wondering up and down Soi Bangla, both getting wetter and wetter as you repeatedly reloaded your water gun at 10 bath a refill.

I am wondering how many people like myself forgot that Monday was a national holiday as far as the government offices were concerned.  I ventured over to Phuket Town from Patong early Monday morning in an attempt to get in and out of Immigration quickly, only to be met by closed doors and a sign telling me the obvious that the offices were closed for the Songkran holiday.  OH Well, what is a little gas wasted on a nice Monday morning.

How many of you actually observed the true meaning of Songkran and visited a temple?  Did you get the traditional blessing from the monks?  Perhaps you as a foreigner, went with your beautiful Thai “girlfriend” on Sunday out of respect.

So you made it through Songkran and your wardrobe is finally dried out when the peace and quiet of the day is broken by roar of big motorcycles descending on Phuket from all over southeast Asia, such as Cambodia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Vietnam as well as expats from Holland, Canada, England and the USA.  Some of you may have noticed that several clubs actually came to Phuket on the original dates of the Phuket Bike Week, driving around Patong with a special police escort.

For those of you that braved the frequent rain storms that marred the festivities were treated to a rare display by the Royal Thai Navy and marines as they demonstrated their skills by storming Patong Beach using smoke grenades and firing blanks to simulate a real amphibious assault.

The scheduled Beauty Contest and Tattoo Contest were fit in between rain storms, picking the most beautiful Phuket lady along with the most colorful, spectacular tattoo.  Notice the interesting choice of outfits the contestant in the beauty pageant.

All of you that made the effort and dodged the rain drops to look at all of the spectacular big bikes that were on display were rewarded with some great bikes.  Along with some beautiful women adorning the bikes.

Luckily, the gods decided their continued celebration of Songkran was on hold for Sunday afternoon, allowing the tree planting along Beach Road to take place, plus the big ride around Phuket to celebrate togetherness.

Dining in Nai Harn - Banana Corner

Restaurants in Phuket - Banana Corner in Nai HarnSituated on the corner of Soi Yuan in Nai Harn, as it turns left to go down to the beach, is the restaurant “Banana Corner”.

Surrounded by Banana trees, it is predominantly a picturesque garden restaurant with patio furniture and bamboo pagodas that offer some privacy along with the trees and bushes creating little sectioned off areas. It does also have some tables sheltered under a
roof if preferred. The garden has water features to make for tranquil surroundings. It also has its own car park.

The food offered is both Thai and Western and aimed at the holiday maker. From sashimi to burgers to green curry, it is good quality food in a nice atmosphere at reasonable prices.

They also have high chairs for kids. Just ask if you need one.

"Hi Francesco

Just wanted to email and say how wonderful our guide Tee was :)

Please let him know that the tour to Phang Nga Bay was great and the service he and Eck the driver provided was exceptional. After we got back from the trip we had lunch at the restaurant which was great and the food was amazing-so much just for the 2 of us. Then he took us to a temple in the cave (sorry can't remember the name) and then was more than happy to take us to Phuket Town, Wat Chalong and the Big Buddha and even after all that he was still happy to take us to see the sunset if we wanted. We were pretty tired so declined. Both Tee and Eck were more than happy to go out of their way to ensure we had a great day.

We were so happy with his service we booked another trip on the Friday to Phi Phi islands and on his recommendation went on the Andaman Sea boat and the service again was very special. He came with us and ensured that the staff we encountered again went out of their way to make our day out superb.

I just wanted to let you and the management of Easy Day know what an asset he is to your company and to personally thank him once again for his superior service.

I would happily recommend your company to anyone wishing to tour while in Phuket.

Kind regards

Carolanne"

Grab your raincoats – Songkran is almost here!

Songkran in Patong Beach - Image of our Friend Jamie MonkYes it has been a year since we celebrated Songkran, 2011, so get ready to do it again.  This year the celebration often referred to as the Water Festival is from Friday, 13th April through Sunday, 15th April. But since it is a national holiday in honor of Thai New Year many businesses will be closed giving their employees a long weekend that actually lasts until the 17th of April.  For those of you that have celebrated Songkran in Patong before, you know what to expect, so don’t complain when you find yourself soaked to the bone on your way to the store.  For those first time participants let me try to explain a little about what to expect during the several days that we celebrate Thai New Year, which is what Songkran means.  The best way I can describe the Songkran celebration in Patong is say that it a water gun fight to end all water gun fights that lasts the first two days.  Now it goes on all over the island so if you are traveling about other parts of Phuket during this period, be prepared to get wet.

Songkran in Patong Beach - Image of our Friend Jamie MonkPatong Beach is the epicenter of the celebration, thus if you are in Patong Friday the 13th or on Saturday the 14th, you will get wet and not just a little wet, but you will be soaked by people with all manner of water guns, buckets of water and all manner of containers so they can dump water on passers by.  If you want to take part in the celebration, first buy a squirt gun from one of the hundreds of vendors along the streets or that are sold in all the stores.  Next, fill your wet gun and head to Soi Bangla where most people like to wonder up and down squirting each other.  Don’t worry about running out of water, there are vendors with barrels of ice cold water that will happily refill your water gun for only 10 baht, but be prepared to get squirted and have ice cold water dumped on you as you wait to refill.  It is all great fun for everyone, although some people, mainly foreigners, do tend to go a bit overboard with very powerful squirt guns, so do be careful. Even the police are not immuned from getting soaked

You will not only get wet, but many Thai’s will cover you face with white powder as a sign of good luck and Buddha’s blessing.  So don’t be surprised when one person is dumping a bucket of water over you, while another is rubbing powder on your cheeks.

You may be asking how did the Songkran/Water Festival/Thai New Year Celebration evolve into this huge water gun fight?  So let’s look at the history of the celebration, the Thai people have celebrated Songkran for centuries to honor the “New Year” based on the Sun passing into a new astrological sign, in this case Aries.  You will be interested to learn that Songkran actually comes from a Sanskrit word, Songkhla, which means the movement or passing of the Sun into a new astrological sign.   Water has always been a important part of the celebration showing the main focus of happiness in the new year,   On the morning of Songkran Day the Thai people will give alms to Buddhist monks, bath Buddha images and pour water onto the hands of the elderly and most respected members of the community.  Following these solemn proceedings, it was customary for young Thai girls to throw water on each other in celebration and it from this practice that today’s huge water celebration has evolved.  The Grand Songkran Festival is celebrated in 13 provinces throughout Thailand in a variety of ways, with the largest being in Bangkok.

It is up to you whether you participate in Songkran and to what degree, but if you are looking for a good time with lots of good natured fun, load up you water guns and join in the celebration.  But don’t forget the solemn side of Songkran since it is probably one of the most important events on the Thai calendar.

18th Annual Phuket Bike Week - 2012

Hold on to you hats and get out the ear plugs because once again Patong is hosting Bike week.  This will be the 18th annual bike week held here in Patong, this year it is also referred to as “Asean Ride Together” to promote the unity among bikers.

For those of you who look forward to Bike Week every year there might be a bit of confusion, the event originally scheduled for the 6th through the 8th of April has been rescheduled to the 20th thru 22nd of April 2012 so adjust your calendars.

Those of you familiar with Bike Week already recognize that it is actually only a three day weekend with loads of activities aimed at both bikers and non-bikers.  For those first timers, the majority of activities occur in and around Patong’s Loma Park.

If you are a big and fancy motorcycle enthusiast or if you just want to see some incredible bikes there will be a Motorcycle Exhibition everyday starting at 3 pm and running late into the night at the football field just across Beach Road from Loma Park.

Live Music at Phuket Bike WeekIf you want to enjoy a variety of music, there will be a several concerts/parties each evening with multiple bands performing, so you can count on lots of musical styles.

Have a fancy set of tattoos, then join the tattoo competition to see how yours stacks up against others from around the world.  If looking at beautiful women is your thing, then you will enjoy the Miss Phuket Bike Week Beauty contest.  Both of these competitions will be held on Friday and Saturday nights, with the finals on Sunday Night.
Miss Phuket Bike Week Contest
Miss Phuket Bike Week Contest

The Bike Week activities kick off at Loma Park around 6 pm on the 20th, with the Biker Games including a Tattoo Show, a Fire Dancing Show and a classical Thai dance show; during these shows there will be games with prizes.  Following the games three bands from Rock City will perform, with round 1 of the Miss Phuket Bike Week 2012 right after the bands finish.  More musical groups will perform after the preview, interrupted by a prize drawing around midnight.

On Saturday 21st of April, the Bike Week activities kick off at 4 pm with a couple of bands in a heated contest, followed by more fun and games including body painting and a tattoo show.  The official grand opening ceremony takes place with many local celebrities and government officials to welcome the many bikers and clubs from around Thailand as well as all over the world.  OK, if can’t speak Thai these ceremonies will be boring, but it maybe a good time to wonder about looking at the big bikes over at the football field or stop for something to eat and drink from the many vendors scattered throughout Loma Park.  Then once the opening ceremonies are finished, round 2 of the Miss Phuket Bike Week contest will be held; followed by more music until the wee hours of the morning.

Bike Week is a fun event with a serious side and that is evident by two big events on Sunday, 22nd of April.  Starting at 3 pm we will have the tree planting to reduce global warming campaign by planting banana trees along the beach of Patong Beach on the way to Kamala Beach.

Immediately following the tree planting will be the driving tour for peace, the route will be from Patong to Karon, Kata, Nai Harn and Laem Phrom Thep and then back to Patong Beach to join the party in Loma Park where another heated contest is going on between two bands.   The finals of the tattoo and Miss Phuket Bike Week take place following the band contest, with a Cowboy, Indian and Reggae show separating the two.  A Memorial Ceremony to officially close out Bike Week, thanking all the participants will take place right after Miss Phuket Bike Week is crowned.  But that doesn’t mean the fun ends, there will be music with a variety of bands playing until 2 am.

Adriano
"Hi Easy Day Thailand,

I am writing to review on my photography workshop with Adriano Trapani on Friday February 17 and Saturday February 18, 2012.

I feel this was a informative workshop, giving the time frame we had to work with.

We firstly went through some of my photos in the morning, and Adriano critiqued the work in the context of his own photographic style.

We then discussed the composition of a photo, how to control exposure, focus and depth of field by changing the shutter speed, aperture and ISO settings.

He offered many specific useful suggestions which was then put into practice in our walk around Old Phuket Town in the afternoon.

The following morning we went to Kathu Waterfalls and Wat Chalong Temples.

We took my friend who was our model, and this allowed Adriano to show me how to utilise an external flash with a softbox on it as well as a normal flash with a remote, and how controlling the light and directing it where you want it will give more emphasis to the main point of interest.

In the afternoon we then went through the images that I had taken, and chose a few images that stood out and worked on them in photoshop.

Adriano showed me how to convert RAW files and how some simple tools in Photoshop can enhance pictures in post-production.

Overall, Adriano gave me the confidence I needed to pursue working in manual, as I have always photographed in auto.

I feel this workshop was extremely valuable, and highly recommend Adriano to those looking to improve all aspects of their photographic knowledge, and I am looking forward to working with Adriano when he visits Australia.

Phuket Airport Transfers with Easy Day Thailand
"Dear Sri,
We were very satisfied with the trips we booked through Easy day. We have been to Thailand several times. It is not always a pleasure driving on the roads, with a driver who thinks he is a rally driver!! But your driver was so kind and drove very carefully. Cant remember his name, but give him our regards.
I will try to give you a comment on tripadvisor asap.

Dear Pornsri,

Good day to you - we had a fantastic time in Thailand - many thanks to Francesca who was very knowledgeable and ensured that we booked trips that would suite our family.

We loved our trip to Racha Yai and the staff where very professional and ensured that we had a good time. We also enjoyed our trip to Phang Nga Bay the scenery is spectacular - I do feel that your clients should be advised of the travelling time by road, my only suggestion would be that the tour guide should have been more knowledge on the areas visited. I would like to have had some detail on the area and the lime formation etc.

I would also like to commended your staff for always being on time for collection and ensuring that we got back to our hotels at the times specified it makes a big difference when you have been out all day.

Many thanks

Marcella

Sa Nang Manora Forest Park

Phang Nga province offers  amazing sceneries and beautiful beaches. One of the hidden treasures is the Sa Nang Manora Forest Park.

Manora Forest Park is only some 6 kilometres away from the northern end of Phang Nga town and we visited on a family trip up to Khao Sok National Park.

You will find a well marked nature trail and a clean picnic area, same as in many Thai park or national park. The trail will show you giant trees a long the cool little stream, small waterfalls, bamboo forest, cliffs with little hidden caves.

It is a shaded pass, and easy walk for most people. We went with our families including small kids and had no problems.

The best feature of the park (if you ask our kids) is that you can plunge into the cool waters pools along the trail.

Phuket Visa Run

Luca, a friend and colleague of us just went up to Ranong to do his Visa Run from Phuket.
Below a brief description of his trip to Myanmar.

RANONG (Myanmar Casino) VISA RUN UPDATE 2011- by Luca Baberi

"Just to update this Visa run as of this week.

We went in a private car (Vios) and left Kamala Beach at 5.50am arriving comfortably at the Andaman Club pier at 9.42 am and checked through to the 10.00 am ferry.
On arrival at the Myanmar side they had a second ferry to come back.

The Casino hostess had a wheelchair ready for me and asked if I wanted to go straight back.
Answering “Yes” she had someone escort me to the return ferry and scurried off up the pier with my passport and 1000 baht. She returned in a few minutes with a passport stamped in and out of Myanmar and 150 baht change (which I tipped her).
It's 850 baht for return ferry and Visa fee.

I doubt if you could do this without her queue-jumping ability – maybe if you were 1st off and hurried. The ferry is 20 minutes each way and 10 minutes each end loading .
They start at 0830 then hourly from 1000 (excepting 1300 lunchtime) until 1700.

DIRECTIONS UPDATE: 04/01/2011

Head north through Ranong on the dual carriageway HWY 4 through a set of traffic lights.
IGNORE any signs for Thai Immigration.
Firstly on the LHS is a Toyota dealership, then Honda (LHS) and Chevrolet (LHS).
50m further there is an Andaman Club sign and turn Left 160 degrees, doubling back around the barricade to take the 90 degree left turn.
You can no longer take a direct 90 degree Left turn here.

Head down the 90 degree road to a T intersection and turn right.
Keep going straight ahead . Looking for the Multipurpose pier, on Hwy 4044 through a 4 way crossing, (sign in Bronze lettering Andaman Club - keep looking for these) in rural areas, past a fishmeal factory on the Left and two cemeteries on the Right.

Turn Right at the Andaman Club sign and Left at the next Club sign (in Thai!) to the carpark and to the departure lounge.
You need to clear Thai Immigration (make sure you have filled out your Departure card which was stamped on your previous entry and pinned to your passport).
Take an Arrival card and fill out for your return journey.

Then go to the counter near the door where you get your ferry ticket and 3 photocopies of your passport (you pay on arrival in Myanmar – 850 baht.)
Proceed up the pier to the ferry. (VIPs get a golf cart ride! 555)

On disembarkation at the Myanmar side proceed up the jetty to Myanmar Immigration and pay at the next counter your 850 baht (60 baht I think for Thais – no visa required, just ID).
They will return your passport when you leave.
Buses will then take you to the casino and back for the next available ferry to Thailand (on the half-hour). There is a restaurant and some duty free there.
On arrival make sure you go through Thai Immigration again ( or you will be on illegal overstay) where you will get 15 days (or 90 days for One year multiple-entry Visa holders) permission to stay.

Rawai Beach - Fancy some Fish?

Where to eat fish and seafood in Rawai Beach, Phuket written by James Bagely

Fancy some Fish?

From Chalong Circle (roundabout), take the 5m dual carriageway south. At the end of this road it turns hard right. If you don’t take this bend, you will find yourself driving down Rawai pier. A clear sign that you have gone wrong somewhere.

100 meters after the right turn the now single lane road opens up onto Rawai Beach. No sun-loungers or umbrellas in sight. At high tied the sea rises all the way up to the sea wall, on the other side of that is a wide footpath lined with a sort of pine tree that runs the whole kilometer length of the beach road. In the water or lying on the sand you will find scores of speedboats and traditional Thai longtail fishing boats. This is a more traditional Thai Fishermans beach, which is why you are here.

At the North end you will find “Nakita’s” bar and restaurant. A popular, western owned and influenced, establishment with Thai lanterns hanging in trees and a view of the sea and the pier at Rawai that remains virtually unused by boats but is popular with pedestrians in the evenings. The pier, simply lit with occasional street lights, makes for a far more attractive picture than the multi-coloured neon lighting that runs along Chalong pier. If you are not hungry you can sit and just have a beer or cocktail, but they also offer a mixture of Thai and Western dishes. If you are missing your traditional English fish, chips and mushy peas, then it is definitely worth a visit. The staff all speak English and it is priced at the tourist. It has some parking.

At the other end of the Beach road is a more Thai style restaurant which, again, overlooks Rawai Beach and Pier. Baan Rawai Sea Food. A more basic ambience, but the sea food makes up for it. You can choose your prawns, fish or crab etc. directly from the tank. Certainly cheaper than its Northerly counterpart, more traditionally Thai and arguably better seafood. It also has its own car park.

My choice, however, is to find somewhere to park along the beach road and find a free table and chairs (Or mat and cushions if you really want Thai style). From there order from one of the many little Thai seafood restaurants that run for about half the length of the beach. The waitresses dance with the traffic to take your orders and serve you some of the most fantastic fish brought in on the longtails that day (or even while you watch sometimes). You still have the sea view and you are on the pavement to take a stroll when you have finished. It is certainly more basic than either of the restaurants, bring your own wine if you want it, but I my opinion the food is better. The locals eat here so it has to be good.

Some options to try:
  • Tempura (battered) squid : It’s always good but if it is really fresh it’s amazing.
  • King Prawns in Tamarind Sauce : Prepare to get sticky.
  • Yam Pladook Fu : Flaked catfish fried until crispy then served on a papaya salad with a strong lemon sauce. It usually comes spicey so let the waitress know if don’t want the chillys.
  • Fish of the day : either fried, barbequed or, in my opinion, best steamed and with a sauce or flavouring of your option.

Customer review - Larry from Canada

"Hi.

Larry Johnston from Canada.
Just wanted to say Thank you to everyone at Easy Day Thailand for all your help during my trip to Thailand and my stay at Phuket. Francesco was extremely helpful in organizing tours and accommodation

Had a fantastic trip and am looking forward to visiting Thailand again.

Here are few pictures of the snow storm from 2 weeks ago. It was as cold as it looks.

Thank you again.
Larry. "
